Study by molecular biology of the tonsillar carriage of Streptococcus pyogenes in children with obstructive tonsillar hypertrophy or recurrent tonsillitis.
Molecular Bacteriology Laboratory (Free University of Brussels) and University Children’s Hospital Queen Fabiola
Primary aim: To analyse the involvement of the tonsillar carriage of GAS in recurrent tonsillitis and chronic obstructive tonsillar hypertrophy in children.
Secondary aims:
- To improve the understanding of the mechanisms behind the tonsillar carriage of GAS in children by studying the expression of specific genes and GAS localisation.
- To compare intra-individually (tonsil surface vs superficial/deep tonsil crypts) in terms of emm-types and antibiotic resistance genes.
- To evaluate the predictive potential of saliva in the detection of GAS tonsillar carriage in children.
